About The Society

A painting of sheep in a field with a distant view of a farm by Peter Grimer

The Society's roots go back to the late 1920's when a few enthusiastic artists met in the town to share their interest in art and to encourage others. Over the years the Society grew considerably - a local newspaper item in 1955 reported that an art exhibition had been held in the town by the Art Society almost continuously since it was formed in 1929.

A Still life of an arrangement of apples and pears by Janet Blackham

In 1960, the same paper reported that our exhibition displayed over 150 pictures and items. Today our exhibitions display over 400 items. As in those days, membership today mainly consists of keen amateurs, but we also have some professionals as members.

Non-painters are welcome to join the Society as are those interested in pottery, sculpting or woodcraft.

Our Annual General Meeting is held in September. Formal business is kept to a minimum and is followed by a demonstration or talk.
